increase your download speed (uTorrent)
Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 9:54 AM

How to speed up your uTorrent's download speed? Let me teach you. It's amazing cause i reach 100kB/s instead of the usual 0.1 - 1kB/s

1. Increase the max half-open TCP connections
Windows XP with SP2, limits the TCP connections to only 10, thus a patch is needed to apply to increase the value to 5o or more. Torrent technology requires your connection to connect many IP as possible to achieve the best speed. This limitation seriously hurts your downloading and uploading speed.

Download the patch Here. (TCP/IP Patch)
Note that some AntiVir Software vendors added the patcher into their virus-definitions. The patcher is often detected as 'Tool/EvID'. However, this patch is NOT A VIRUS. For more information on the security alert, please visit http://www.lvllord.de/

After you open the winRAR file, open the prog file call EvID4226Patch. Choose any number between 50 to 100. That's to set the maximum allowed connections. Afterwhich restart your computer.

Next you need to configure your torrent client to allow 50-100 max half-open TCP connections.
uTorrent user: Options -> Preferences -> Advanced options -> locate this: net.max_halfopen

2. Torrent Client Configuration
In order to apply these tips you need to know your maximum up- and download speed. Test your bandwidth Here (stop all download activity while testing).

3. Always update Utorrent when update is available.

4. Disable Windows Firewall

5. Turn on Encryption
Encrypting your torrents will prevent throttling ISP’s from limiting your BitTorrent traffic.

Go to: Options > Preferences > BitTorrent

Go to ‘Protocol encryption’, you can choose between ‘enabled’ and ‘forced’. ‘Enabled’ will give you more connections but offers less protection against traffic shapers.

I would recommend to try ‘enabled’ first, if that doesn’t increase your speeds you need to switch to ‘forced’. (In my case, i switch to force and my download speed went up double. 100kB/s)

Ticking ‘Allow legacy incoming connections’ allows non ecrypted clients to connect to you. This improves compatibility between clients but makes you more vulnerable to traffic shapers.

And finally, you're ready to go. Happy downloading. Cheers (:
